FPV or DRONE RACING


Drone racing otherwise known as FPV (First Person View) racing is a comparatively new sport where drone pilots compete from the ground by flying drones equipped with cameras that send continuous live feed to the head mounted screens which the pilots wear. These specialized FPV goggles give the feel as if the pilots are sitting in the cockpit of the UAV and flying it.
The FPV racing was first introduced for the drone enthusiasts in late 2014 in Australia. The World Air Sports Federation which is the world air sport governing body has approved FPV Racing events.
FPV racing is still in its infancy stage and very gradually it is growing. From the FPV racing regulations to the technology, everything is being updated continuously. Previously these FPV racing was introduced for RC planes but later on people started racing with multi-motor drones which turned out to be a better alternative.
The goal of these races is to finish the set course as fast as possible. These racing courses have tight spaces, many small obstacles like flags, cones, walls; in such places FPV drones proved to be a better choice than RC planes as these are lighter, more stable, more agile, easier to maneuver and gives the pilots a more immersive view of the surroundings through its FPV specialized camera and goggle

Drone Racing Leagues
Drone racing is comparatively new and so there are few drone racing leagues to name all over the world.
Each racing league has its own specification like racing course, racing environment either indoor or outdoor, standard equipment type either open or standard spec, combat rules and so on.

Here are some drone racing leagues:

Aerial Grand Prix: An indoor and outdoor racing league with gates and flags as obstacles in the race course for drones that are 250Mini, Pro Super Mini and Open Class. Usually arranged in major cities world-wide.
Aerial Action Sports League: Arranged by Game of Drones, it is a 3-hour stunt and combat event.
Flight Club: Arranged by Game of Drones, it is a local drone combat event.
Multi GP: Started in 2015 currently only for US cities, it is a drone racing league only for FPV RC Quadcopters.
Racing FPV: Canadian indoor racing league with flags and gates for 250mm and open class drones.

Weather is the most crucial factor in any format of drone racing. Drone racing is such a racing where it is team and drone VS team and drone. Some drone may get undue advantage due to any particular weather condition. So to eradicate such chances of unfair advantages, most drone racing events are held indoors. This ensures that the competing is done completely on the skills of the pilots and the design of the drones.
However, the local meet up groups usually race wherever they find a suitable race course.

Rotor Cross
Most exciting format where two or more racers compete simultaneously to see who crosses the finish line first.
Drag Race
Usually within a distance of 100 yards or 100 meters where two or more drone races simultaneously, and the winner is the one that accelerates over a short distance the fastest.
Time-Trial
In this format drones race alone, and the shortest elapsed time is the winner.

Factors Affecting Drone Racing



FPV racing is all about the piloting skills but there are some factors that are to some extend affect the maneuverability of the drones like:

Speed: Usually 35 mph is the top speed for any drones, but the racing drones tend to go can go over 50mph (sometimes 75 mph).
The easiest way to achieve higher speeds is to use batteries with higher voltages like 14.8v unlike the traditional batteries of 11.1v.
The lighter the drone is, the speedier it is. So carbon fiber can be a good choice for props.

Sight:
Camera is the most crucial factor for FPV racing. The FPV camera should able to tilt from 1 to almost 80 degrees in forward flight, a wide field of view (FOV), and high frame rate of 60 fps.

Durability: Smaller and lighter drones tend to be more durable. Usually racing drones come in the size range of 230mm and 300 mm. But 250mm small mini racing drones are best as these only damage their replaceable parts when they crash not the entire frame.

Maneuverability: Perhaps the most important factor of all, a combination of control response time, flight controller, and lift power.
The maneuverability of the drones determines how smoothly and efficiently one can fly the drone around tricky obstacles like tight gaps.
